BT launches multi-million-pound NB-IoT network to support UK Smart Cities

B

T has launched its new multi-million-pound NB-IoT network , which is set to pave the way for more UK Smart Cities and industries – with the network covering 97 % of the UK population . Expected UK outdoor population coverage based on licensed spectrum in the 1800MHz band . It is underpinned by the award-winning EE mobile network .
NB-IoT is a low-power network with the potential to transform industries such as utilities , construction and the public sector – by securely and reliably connecting the devices to automate many processes that currently require manual oversight or direct involvement .
BT ’ s new NB-IoT network will enable low-data-demand assets , such as street lighting or underground water sensors , to be connected over a smart network . This will not only deliver long battery life , but it can also enhance efficiency and reduce costs ( by automatically detecting leaks in water infrastructure , for example ). having previously trialled sensors to monitor haystack temperature and prevent fire risks , as well as safekeeping of livestock through gate sensors .
Chris Keone , MD , Division X at BT , said : “ Growing numbers of businesses are beginning to realise the benefits of IoT applications and our UK-wide NB-IoT network opens up a wide range of connectivity solutions for monitors , sensors and other smart devices . Whether it ’ s building the Smart Cities of the future or reducing carbon emissions , our network will provide customers with the reliability and efficiency they need .”
The rollout of the network will allow BT to help fast-track ‘ Smart Cities ’ of the future through use cases that include monitoring and optimising energy use , storage and distribution . The agricultural industry will also stand to benefit from IoT connectivity , with BT

Findable launches AI building documentation solutions to the UK

F indable , which automates building documentation using Artificial Intelligence ( AI ), has arrived in the UK to solve building document chaos , using AI to read and automatically sort over one million documents for its customers to date . Building documentation is a key factor in cost and risk management and yet all too often property owners keep a mixture of analogue and digital systems .

Findable digitises building documentation , using AI to automatically categorise documents , provide compliance status and allowing users to locate specific information via a search function . The software is able to analyse headlines , pictures and drawings , and quickly conclude what the document shows and how it should be organised . It also produces a red flag report for each building which shows a building ’ s compliance status with items organised by what is required by law or operationally recommended . The red flag report shows what ’ s missing and assists users in filling these gaps .
Renovating buildings and reusing building materials is key across Europe but the challenge is the lack of knowledge around how old the materials are , what they are made of , or how much longer they are safe to use . “ To reach the climate goals , we have to reuse as much of the world ’ s materials as possible , but we need documentation in place to make it happen ”, said CEO and Co-founder of Findable , Fredrik H . Wisløff . “ Then there is also an associated key safety challenge which the recent RAAC issue highlighted .
“ Our system works for schools but also offices , shopping malls , warehouses so can be used by a mixture of public sector , banks and private commercial companies from large-scale problems to more day-to-day maintenance issues .”
