Research shows 19.2 % employed in engineering and technology occupations

The report also found people working in engineering and technology occupations – which employs 6.3 million people in the UK , were significantly more likely to earn more compared to the average across all other occupations combined .
The data , using the Office of National Statistics ’ ( ONS ’) latest 2023 Labour Force Survey ( LFS ) and our ‘ engineering footprint ’, follows on from the Engineering UK ’ s Women in Engineering report published earlier in the year . This report provides the latest figures for those working in engineering and technology roles . It also looks at the composition of the engineering workforce , including breakdown by characteristics including age , gender and ethnicity . Employment by region , industry and occupation are also analysed .

E ngineering UK ’ s latest UK workforce report shows that almost a fifth of the workforce is employed in engineering and tech roles .

A further 10.2 % were working in the industry but not in an engineering or technology occupation , which might include , for example , those working in HR at an engineering or technology company .
Head of Research at EngineeringUK , Becca Gooch , said , “ Our analysis also found marked gender differences in the popularity of some engineering and technology occupations . Roles like ‘ IT managers ’, ‘ quality assurance and regulatory professionals ’ and ‘ food and drink process operatives ’ were significantly more common among women working in engineering and tech , while ‘ electricians and electrical fitters ’, ‘ construction and building trades ’, and ‘ carpenters and joiners ’ were more common among men .”

Revolut launches new ‘ Rev-Women in Engineering Grant ’ offering up to £ 5,000 to support top talent

R evolut , the global FinTech with over 10 million UK customers and 45 million globally , has announced the launch of its new Rev-Women in Engineering Grant , offering five grants of up to £ 5,000 to top talent in the 2025 intern cohort of future women in engineering .

The programme is designed to invest in the next generation of women in engineering , by supporting talent across UK and European universities . Five grants of up to £ 5,000 , paid in local currency , are available to the best interns who apply and successfully complete the internship in a Software Engineering role , ensuring they have financial freedom to complete their studies and focus on developing their careers .
Women make up just 25 % of the workforce in the tech industry , and an even smaller percentage of those work in engineering roles . The engineering sector as a whole saw a drop in the percentage of female engineers in the UK from 16.5 % in 2023 to 15.7 % in 2024 . Revolut is committed to improving gender diversity both within tech and engineering , and are encouraging applications from all individuals identifying as women to apply to the programme . training and workshops to build career skills and confidence . The grant is open to applications from identifying women studying STEM degrees in Spain , Poland , Portugal and the UK , who are predicted to achieve equivalent to a 2.1 or above upon graduation .
