Fujitsu and Carnegie Mellon University develop AI-powered social Digital Twin technology with traffic data from Pittsburgh

F ujitsu and Carnegie Mellon University has announced the development of a new technology to visualise traffic situations , including people and vehicles , as part of joint research on Social Digital Twin that began in 2022 . The technology transforms a 2D scene image captured by a monocular RGB camera into a digitalised 3D format using AI , which estimates the 3D shape and position of people and objects enabling highprecision visualisation of dynamic 3D scenes . Starting February

2024 , Fujitsu and Carnegie Mellon University will conduct field trials leveraging data from intersections in Pittsburgh , USA , to verify the applicability of this technology .
This technology relies on AI that has been trained to detect the shape of people and objects through deep learning . This system is composed of two core technologies : 1 ) 3D Occupancy Estimation Technology that estimates the 3D occupancy of each object only from a monocular RGB camera , and 2 ) 3D Projection Technology that accurately locates each object within 3D scene models . By utilising these technologies , images taken in situations in which people and cars are densely situated , such as at intersections , can be dynamically reconstructed in 3D virtual space , thereby providing a crucial tool for advanced traffic analysis and potential accident prevention that could not be captured by surveillance cameras . Faces and license plates are anonymised to help preserve privacy .
Going forward , Fujitsu and Carnegie Mellon University aim to commercialise this technology by 2025 by verifying its usefulness not only in transportation but also in Smart Cities and traffic safety , with the aim of expanding its scope of application .

Huawei releases next-gen Smart City solutions to accelerate city intelligence

D uring MWC 2024 , Huawei released its next-gen Smart City solutions at a roundtable event themed ‘ Building City Intelligent Twins to Accelerate City Intelligence ’.

Smart City construction is rapidly advancing , and the growing intricacy of urban management necessitates fresh architectures and technologies to promote the ongoing upgrade of city digitalisation . City intelligent twins represent a futureoriented , next-gen digital city technical architecture . Based on technologies such as IoT sensing , high-speed connectivity , cloud computing , Big Data , and AI foundation models , this architecture helps build an integrated intelligent system featuring cloudnetwork-edge-device synergy , integrate all-domain data for city governance , ensure continuous operations , enable smooth running and self-optimisation for the city , and ultimately make the city smarter .
During the conference , Huawei showcased advanced solutions such as Smart City IOC , government services , and city foundation models , striving to enhance city governance . The IOC integrates the functions of city perception , operation management , collaborative command , and decision-making analysis , and is the ‘ centre ’ of city operation management . The government services solution leverages the AI assistant to deliver pleasant and intelligent government service handling experiences . City foundation models are applied to city operation , management , command , and services to improve quality while increasing efficiency , building a foundation for city intelligence .
Based on the city intelligent twins architecture , Huawei works with global partners to build new digital infrastructures to achieve efficient city governance and accelerate city intelligence . In practice , Huawei has successfully improved the collaboration efficiency of urban management departments by 40 % and the efficiency of handling public opinion incidents by 30 %.
Zhou Hongquan , COO of Government Public Services Digitalisation BU of Huawei , said : “ The innovative city intelligent twins architecture is Huawei ’ s latest achievement in core Smart City technologies and applications . It helps city managers optimise operations efficiency of the city , improves residents ’ quality of life , and provide powerful support for the sustainable development of Smart Cities .”
