The globalisation of talent pool , accelerated in large part due to the pandemic and the resulting ‘ war for talent ’ has brought to the forefront something that business visionaries have long known – that an organisation ’ s success hinges critically on the calibre of its people .
In the construction industry , tenders will often stipulate what certifications and qualifications the team members being assigned to a project must have . But at AESG , we see these are the baseline and encourage our staff to develop a far greater level of expertise . This is made possible through our mentorship program which pairs younger team members with senior staff , or even our industry veterans with counterparts who have specialisations in complementary areas of expertise .
Fostering the next generation of talent is also something we see as being our obligation to our industry . In addition to our internship program , we partner with several universities in the Middle East and London to identify promising talent and aid their journey towards becoming professionals who play a lead role in advancing the industry .
You have made strong sustainability commitments . Why is the global sustainable building movement important to you and how are you ensuring you keep to the commitments such as your Net Zero Carbon Emission targets ?
In its ‘ final warning ’ on the climate crisis , issued earlier this year , the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ) stressed the urgency of taking ‘ swift and drastic ’ action to avert irrevocable damage to the world . While the nature of capitalism and modern markets dictates that businesses must prioritise their bottom line , I believe organisations now have a moral obligation to also minimise the environmental impact of their operations . Complying with baseline regulations or simply greenwashing are no longer sufficient .
At AESG , we have helped countless clients in their decarbonisation efforts so it only flows naturally that we must first walk the talk . While bottom line focused business leaders could be convinced by understanding the long-term cost benefits of more sustainable assets and operations , few decision makers can be easily coaxed to make the upfront capital investments .
Of course , championing sustainability requires more than just words . We take our subscription to the WorldGBC ’ s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment very seriously and have well-defined measures in place to closely monitor key metrics pertaining to our carbon footprint . We track and report on our CO 2 emission on an annual basis and make these results available in our sustainability report .
Our commitment to sustainability isn ’ t limited to our own operations or that of our clients . We aim to create awareness in the broader industry and have even made significant investments in developing a free-to-use online tool that can greatly aid businesses on their journey to carbon neutrality . This ‘ Pathway to Net Zero ’ tool provides developers , designers and contractors with a consolidated , accessible and pragmatic design pathway for targeting Net Zero Carbon developments – reviewing and advising on both embodied and operational elements of the building to consider , for a range of typologies .
What does the future hold for AESG ?
We have a clearly defined five-year-plan in place which we continue to refine with a focus on constantly elevating our value proposition . This will involve growing our workforce and establishing more physical offices in new regions across the globe .
On a more tactical and short-term level , a key objective for AESG this year is to harness the incredible power and potential of digital tools , with a particular focus on AI . We have internal AI champions who are actively exploring how AI can be incorporated into our business processes and even developing AI-based tools in-house . �
